Restaurant Review: Dining at a Crossroads
The corner of Walnut Hill and 75 has been in severe need of good food for quite some time. It’s not that we don’t love Dave & Busters for wings and beer while watching a game or attempting to rack up enough tickets for that XBOX 360, but Crossroads Diner, with its sticky bun mural on the side of the building, is an entirely different ticket.
When the Sig-O and I walked in on a Saturday morning, the place was full and we were politely told by the hostess (who chose green as the color of the day – shirt, hair and eye shadow) there would be a 15-20 minute wait. No worries, we each grabbed a section of the paper, did the usual read, switch, read, our buzzer went off and we were seated easily within the 15 minutes we were told.
The Sig-O was in need of the caffeine after a late Friday night and Crossroads brews an excellent cup of Joe, or Illy as the case may be. I’m not a huge coffee drinker, but have had enough to know when there’s a good cup worth drinking. Full disclosure- I’d read a review of Crossroads and was told to order the Sticky Bun to split as an appetizer. While I’m not one to normally choose a breakfast appetizer, I went with the advice, as well as the proof on every other table, and ordered it. Good call. The sticky bun is good, like really, really good, like Sig-O was going to get a fork in the back of the hand if I didn’t get the last bite.
As we perused the menu, everything sounded good. Breakfast is served all day, with lunch kicking in at 11 a.m. It should also be noted that Crossroads is only open for breakfast and lunch. Crossroads does frittatas rather than omelets, but I’m good with that. I finally chose the one with chorizo, red peppers and goat cheese, and I asked for grits rather than toast. The other half ordered the waffles.
The frittata was light, fluffy and topped with nuggets of yummy goat cheese. The chorizo was also flavorful and a wonderful friend to the goat cheese. The disappointment came around on the grits. I love grits, I’m all about grits. Toast as a side? No thanks, I’ll sub that for grits. So I was so sad when the grits showed up with what looked like melty cheese grease on top. Mixed it up, still no better. Sig-O, who’s not so much the grit connoisseur, asks, “Are grits supposed to look like that?” I reply, “Negatory, but share that waffle?” The waffle is done perfectly. Crunchy on the outside, yet soft on the inside and wonderfully absorbing the melting butter and syrup. “Trade you for the grits?” I offer. “Not a chance, but you can have another bite,” I get in response. Not a bad settlement there.
While we only had a chance to try the breakfast offerings at Crossroads, the lunch choices sounded quite good with various sandwiches, gourmet salads and burgers that would make your mouth water. The service was friendly and the people watching is fantastic. Whether it’s the Lake Highlands family enjoying breakfast before a soccer game, the cute 30-somethings grabbing a bite after a workout (it justifies the sticky bun), or the HP couples with the baby who decided to venture out of the bubble, Crossroads Diner seems to fill the void of good food at this crossroads.
